Abate Restaurant
After being unable to visit the highly anticipated bead exhibit, we were hungry and disappointed. To fix this, we ventured into historic little Italy, New Haven. The original plan was to settle for Frank Pepe’s, which doesn’t serve Hawaiian pizza. A little further down the street, however, we spotted a different pizzeria, Abaté. With its very own parking lot, Hawaiian pizza on the menu, and Bill Clinton’s approval it was impossible to say no. Prior to even having the pizza we knew that Abaté was a special place, one fundamentally superior to Frank Pepe’s. The pizza had a crisp, light crust and we opted for half sauce half no sauce to get the entire experience. While the lines were blurred at times between the different sauce zones, the flavor potential was without a doubt above average. The quantity of cheese was tasteful and really brought out the flavor of the pineapple and the ham. The pineapple distribution was generous and was a welcomed touch. The ham, however, had hot spots. Occasionally the room began to spin while eating the pizza, likely due to extreme ham intake. Regardless, the ham worked very well together with the pineapple around 60% of the time which resulted in a fantastic flavor. To top off the pizza, a touch of oregano and garlic really added another dimension to the flavor. Overall a great pizza.
