Bohemian Pizza
We decided to visit Bohemian Pizza while doing another one of our DEEP sky’s the limit hike at Mt Tom. We were plotting on going here before we even left for our hike and were very excited to have their inventive take on the Hawaiian pizza, the islander. When we arrived we took a seat by the ginormous murky fish tank. The walks of the restaurant were coated in vintage pop culture posters, a mona lisa, some games such as jenga, black board paint which had lots of chalk drawings and writings. Now that the scene is set, let’s get on to the pizza. We ordered half islander, half amigo pizza. The latter of which was a Mexican pizza however the specifics of this are beyond the scope of this review. Although it’s worth mentioning that the 50/50 split was masterfully executed, there was no overlap in flavor! Wow! The islander is a tomato sauce base, mozzarella cheese, BBQ pulled pork, red onion, and pineapple pizza garnished with scallions. Right from the beginning you know you’re dealing with a different breed of Hawaiian pizza. The BBQ sauce flavor was very nice and it definitely stole the show. The BBQ sauce was the most powerful flavor on the pizza and the pulled pork did a fine job of carrying the sauce. The pineapple was really good and sweet but there could have been more on the pizza. The cheese was super tasty, and was a great amount. Not overwhelming. The tomato sauce was subdued by the BBQ sauce but it was a good addition nonetheless as it provided a little sour and a little acidity which helped balance out all the sweet. The crust was very thin and crispy, a little charred on the edges. It was a flatbread type beat. Overall it was really good but it’s hard to compare to other Hawaiian pizzas. Due to this we conclude that this is simply a different type of pizza. It’s also probably not the right direction to getting to the supreme Hawaiian taste. Generally, in a Hawaiian pizza, the pineapple is what balances out the saltiness of the pizza. But in the case of a pizza such as the Islander, there is no salty to balance out. The pizza is big sweet and the pineapple can’t compete with the potency of the sweetness from the BBQ sauce.
