D.P. Dough

Review

Full Review

DP dough is one of the most dependable sources of sustenance on UConn campus. So when our anniversary fell on a busy weekday, it only made sense to get some maui-wowi zones*. The elephant in the room is that these are calzones - not pizzas, but that’s okay because they’re a fun shape and taste good. One would think that a calzone is as heavy and greasy as you could get but the opposite is true here. The maui-wowi zone is uncharacteristically light. The outer crust is very thin and doesn’t taste of much - just bread crumb. It’s purpose is to provide a little resistance and protection for the soft, airy dough inside. The dough is a perfect delivery device for the side marina sauce. The sauce keeps everything hydrated with its refreshing sourness and acidity. Additionally, its contrasting flavor profile brings the best out of the mozzarella, ham, and pineapple. The pineapple was super sweet and the ham was delicious, even in high volumes. While not a recommendation by any means, Abby says you’d even be able to bass boost your order with extra ham without ruining the zone- it’s just that good! The cheese is very light and doesn’t congeal quickly, which highlights one of the key strengths of the calzone format. Each bite reveals a new cheese surface, allowing for an extended period of flavor integrity in comparison to conventional pizza pie counterparts. The maui-wowi zone doesn’t break any boundaries but its a respectable Hawaiian pizza-esque item that can hold its own. *Well to be precise, Bartek got the maui-wowi zone while Abby opted for something disgusting (vegan cheese and pineapple)** **this is not a dig at vegan or vegetarian options, this was just BAD (but not as bad as screamers!)
